MCP – Concept

  • Client

  • Server

  • Transport Mechanims:

    • STDIO: This works only when mcp client and mcp server are running on the same machine
    • Streamable HTTP: This works with http as a transport mechanism, so supports multiple hosts

  • STDIO (Standard input and output): roughly a stream (file is opened) which client writes and server reads and when server writes client reads

Agent -> Where will mcp fit

  • Agent will have mcp client and it will interact with mcp server.

Setting up dev environment

  • python 3.12 or above
  • uv
  • Lets create a new folder learning_mcp and cd into it
uv init --python 3.12
uv add "mcp[cli]>=2"
uv add --dev ipykernel
  • Now open vscode and select python interpreter
  • install node js using nvm
    • windows winget install -e --id CoreyButler.NVMforWindows
    • Mac: brew install nvm

  • Install latest lts
nvm install lts
nvm use lts
node --version
npm --version
npx --version
  • install claude desktop on your laptop
